Celebrating World Contraception Day!

The recent commemoration of World Contraception Day in Mhangura served as a critical platform to address the multifaceted challenges surrounding adolescent girls’ and young women’s access to contraception and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) services. My Age Africa, in collaboration with key partners, played a pivotal role in documenting the structural and legal barriers that impede young people’s access to these essential services. Through the strategic use of storytelling, the initiative amplified youth voices, fostering engagement among policymakers, service providers, and community leaders.
A significant outcome of the commemoration was the reaffirmation by the Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr. Douglas Mombeshora, of the Ministry’s unwavering commitment to youth reproductive health. Dr. Mombeshora announced forthcoming plans for the establishment of a new youth center in Mhangura, a development poised to promote meaningful participation of young people in decision-making processes related to their health and well-being.
In a parallel effort to bolster sustainable access to contraception, the Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council (ZNFPC) launched the National Contraceptive Cost Recovery Framework. This framework represents a crucial milestone in the ongoing pursuit of equitable access to contraceptives across the nation. By addressing the financial barriers that often hinder access, the framework is expected to significantly improve the reproductive health outcomes of adolescent girls and young women in Zimbabwe.
World Contraception Day in Mhangura underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in empowering adolescent girls and young women through improved access to contraception and SRHR services. The initiatives undertaken by My Age Africa, the Ministry of Health and Child Care, and the ZNFPC demonstrate a concerted commitment to addressing the structural, legal, and financial barriers that impede progress in this critical area.
Continued focus and investment in these efforts are essential to ensuring that all young people have the opportunity to make informed choices about their reproductive health and shape their own futures.
