My Age Zimbabwe, under the STEPS project, convened a stakeholders meeting in Masvingo, which brought together youth leaders, local authorities, representatives from environmental agencies, and members of civil society organizations to advance youth-led climate action and fortify resilience building within the Masvingo region.
A focal point of the event was the facilitated film screening of the community story “Garden.” This film illustrated the tangible impacts of climate change on local communities. The screening catalyzed profound reflections among the attendees, fostering a connection between the realities depicted on screen and the potential for practical, localized solutions. Emphasis was placed on the power of storytelling in converting climate messages into relatable narratives capable of promoting collective action.
Masvingo City Council provided updates on its youth-inclusive initiatives, including tree-planting campaigns, school clean-up competitions, and the meaningful integration of young people in policy formulation processes, such as budget consultations. These initiatives represent a concerted effort to cultivate environmental stewardship and encourage active community participation in the construction of climate resilience.
Complementing these endeavors, the Environmental Management Agency underscored the critical importance of afforestation, biogas production, water harvesting techniques, and innovative waste-to-energy solutions. Their presentation reinforced the understanding that bolstering climate resilience demands both innovative strategies and a strong sense of community ownership.
The engagement culminated with participants reaffirming their commitment to supporting youth-led tree planting and water harvesting projects. Further emphasis was placed on strengthening the involvement of junior councils and schools in local climate initiatives.
Attendees also underscored the value of ongoing community clean-up campaigns and the utilization of innovative tools, such as photo voices, to document environmental challenges and inspire positive behavioral shifts within neighborhoods. These commitments collectively demonstrated a resolve to translate awareness into tangible action, ensuring that young people remain at the forefront of Masvingo’s journey toward climate resilience.
The session proved successful in fostering dialogue, strengthening existing partnerships, and expanding the burgeoning collection of youth-driven climate stories. By transforming personal narratives into actionable community initiatives, the STEPS Project continues to inspire a unified movement dedicated to local climate solutions and environmental stewardship, effectively placing young voices at the heart of the pursuit of climate justice in Masvingo.
