My Age Africa, in partnership with the Masvingo City Council, recently conducted a skills training session focused on empowering young students to drive social change within their communities by equipping young individuals with the necessary skills to lead conversations, influence decisions, and mobilize communities toward meaningful social progress.
The interactive program incorporated theory, practice, and reflective exercises with a core component of the training involving redefining the role of a facilitator. Participants learned to view themselves not as lecturers or trainers, but as neutral guides responsible for creating inclusive spaces for dialogue and fostering participation from diverse voices.
The training curriculum also emphasized practical skills, such as guiding discussions toward actionable outcomes, participants learned techniques for helping groups identify concrete steps for change, and strategies for effectively closing sessions by summarizing key insights and reinforcing subsequent actions.
Furthermore, the session addressed the crucial aspect of impact measurement, enabling Participants to explore a range of quantitative and qualitative tools, including surveys, demographic reports, observation, and storytelling, to evaluate the effectiveness of their facilitation efforts in influencing attitudes, behaviors, and community engagement.
Motivated by their newly acquired skills, participants expressed their intention to apply their learnings in community dialogues, film screenings, and peer engagement initiatives.
The collaboration with the City Council underscored the importance of partnerships in promoting youth empowerment and establishing sustainable pathways for advocacy, representing a significant step towards cultivating a generation of young leaders capable of guiding their communities through constructive dialogue, critical reflection, and collective action, ultimately fostering positive social change.
