Empowering Students to Make Safer Choices!!

Over the years, My Age Zimbabwe has been using theatre for Development to drive meaningful conversations and narrative change. My Age, with the use of theatre for development, engaged Great Zimbabwe University students during the first year of orientation. The theater play highlighted the risks of intergenerational relationships and HIV prevention.

The orientation brought together young people alongside civil society organizations, service providers, and educators to explore the intersections of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), personal agency, and safer decision-making.

By portraying the consequences of unequal power dynamics, the performance encouraged students to reflect on their own choices while showcasing alternative paths focused on education, supportive peer networks, and informed decision-making.

Audience reactions were mixed but powerful. Many students found the story relatable and eye-opening, noting that it reinforced the value of self-respect and peer support. Several appreciated the interactive and engaging format, which allowed them to discuss sensitive issues in a safe space. Some students, however, felt uncomfortable, as the play challenged cultural norms and questioned behaviors traditionally accepted in society. Despite this, the performance successfully sparked honest dialogue, empowering students to consider healthier relationship dynamics and risk reduction strategies.

The discussion highlighted the importance of sustained awareness programs, peer education, and collaboration with campus and local health services. Recommendations included creating supportive peer groups, facilitating small-group dialogues, and conducting interactive workshops on HIV prevention, gender equality, and healthy relationships. These initiatives aim to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to make safer choices and advocate for their SRHR.
