In anticipation of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, My Age Africa, in collaboration with key stakeholders and hosted by Midweek Watch, convened a crucial digital conversation addressing the escalating issue of digital gender-based violence (GBV). The GBV outreach campaign spotlighted the challenges faced by men, women, and girls in the digital sphere, emphasizing the urgent need for comprehensive solutions.
A primary concern raised during the discussion was the pervasive lack of awareness, particularly among young people, regarding digital safety and platform security. Participants stressed the importance of educating individuals about protecting their digital lives and empowering parents to actively safeguard their children online. Raising awareness about digital GBV and its various forms is crucial in fostering a safer online environment for all.
The conversation also highlighted the need to provide survivor-centered support to victims of digital GBV. Ensuring access to resources and assistance for those affected is paramount in addressing the trauma and harm caused by online violence.
Furthermore, participants emphasized the importance of strengthening policies that protect the rights of individuals in the digital realm. Robust legal frameworks are essential in holding perpetrators accountable and preventing future acts of digital GBV.
The collaborative effort between My Age Africa, stakeholders, and Midweek Watch underscores a commitment to tackling digital GBV head-on. By raising awareness, providing support, and advocating for policy changes, this initiative aims to create a digital landscape where everyone can participate safely and without fear of violence.
