My Experience as a Feminist Advocate with My Age Africa!

Nyasha Blessing

My involvement with My Age Africa as a feminist advocate has proven to be a profoundly transformative and empowering experience. The organisation has provided a vital platform, enabling me to amplify my voice and stand in unwavering solidarity with fellow young individuals, with a particular emphasis on girls and young women, in our collective pursuit of advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR).

The reporting aspect of my work has instilled within me a deep appreciation for the necessity of documenting community realities with accuracy, sensitivity, and a clear sense of purpose. The process of composing reports following dialogues and outreach initiatives has significantly strengthened my ability to capture key insights, identify existing gaps, and formulate actionable recommendations.

Furthermore, I have come to understand that reporting transcends the mere recording of events; it encompasses the crucial act of narrating the stories of young people whose voices often remain unheard and marginalized.

Mobilization has emerged as another critical facet of my journey. Actively engaging young people and fostering their participation in community dialogues and awareness sessions has played a crucial role in cultivating my confidence and honing my leadership skills. I have gained valuable experience in effective communication, building trust within diverse communities, and creating safe and inclusive spaces where young people feel empowered to share their experiences and perspectives openly.

Despite encountering challenges such as lower-than-anticipated turnout or unforeseen delays, I have cultivated resilience and adaptability, ensuring that our activities remain impactful and meaningful.

Facilitation has undoubtedly been one of the most rewarding dimensions of my work. Leading discussions on sensitive and often stigmatized topics such as contraception, mental health, and gender equality has significantly strengthened my capacity to guide conversations in an inclusive and respectful manner.

I have learnt the importance of active listening, skillfully managing diverse opinions, and ensuring that every participant feels valued and respected. Witnessing young people challenge deeply ingrained myths, ask probing questions, and commit to disseminating accurate information has been an incredibly fulfilling and inspiring experience.

In summation, my journey with My Age Africa has profoundly shaped me into a more confident, informed, and passionate feminist advocate. It has deepened my understanding of the multifaceted needs of communities and strengthened my unwavering commitment to promoting equity and universal access to information.

I am deeply inspired to continue leveraging my voice and skills to effect positive change and empower others to do the same, fostering a more equitable and just society for all.
